There is a saying that October is to photographers what April is to tax accountants. I couldn’t agree more, but for this photographer, the reason is not just business. It is the peak of livestock show season that occurs at the North Carolina State Fair each year. I can remember going back to visit the livestock barns at the Fair as a child, but I never imagined how my life would evolve to be IN the barns as a parent! My boys show lambs and pigs so for a week in the fall, we move to Raleigh with livestock in tow.
I have posted the images I was able to capture this year in galleries on my website so the kids can add the photos to their project books and/or use them on social media. Unlike our local 4-H show and sale where my goal is to photograph each child, my mission at the State Fair was to capture journalistic samples. Taking pictures in the barns is very different from the professional portrait photography I normally do. Unlike a professional session, there is no way to control the lighting which makes getting sharp images and proper colors in mixed light quite a challenge. With that disclaimer, go forth and take a look to see if you find yourself, a friend, or some really cute and talented young people!
